We’re excited to be part of the Center on Conscience & War’s 75th Anniversary Celebration!

Stay tuned for details.

“The Center on Conscience & War is a non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of conscience, opposes military conscription, and serves all conscientious objectors to war.

Most people, upon hearing what we do, wonder how someone can still be a CO in a post-draft military. They volunteered to join, after all.

The answer is simple: killing, and even training, to kill, are not natural for humanity. We are predisposed to peace, yet our dominant cultural narrative depends on belief to the contrary in order for war-making to be possible. It only follows that young people join the military thinking they will be brave heroes — the good guys who protect the rest of us from the bad guys.

Until they get there — to boot camp, to the war zone, to the confessional, or wherever they are when the curtain is finally drawn back and the myth they have been told their whole lives is exposed, allowing them to see clearly that war, and all that comes with it, is wrong.

Just as people outside of the military are surprised to hear that CO is still around today, many members of the military do not know about CO and find themselves searching for a way to be true to their conscience’. While struggling with this inner conflict, they are at risk of violating their orders, the consequences of which we all know can be quite severe. Worse yet, though, they are at risk of violating their conscience’ — the consequences of which are infinite, and which we are just beginning to understand. These wounds to the soul are appropriately called moral injury.”
